Kim Hackford-Peer
University of UtahEducationKim was raised in Brighton, a small town on the outskirts of Denver. Growing up, Kim excelled academically and athletically. Throughout adolescence, she refused to acknowledge her sexual orientation in order to maintain social and family harmony. Once in college at Colorado State University, she did finally come out, only to see her fears played out in front of her. She lost friends and the support of her family. Kim earned a Bachelor’s degree to be a math teacher but instead chose to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Justice Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. While in graduate school, Kim worked full-time with the NCCJ developing inclusive leadership curriculum for youth and serving on the Board of Directors for a youth LGBT drop-in center. She has also worked in Student Services and has advised multiple college GSAs, most recently at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. Kim now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah pursuing her PhD in Education Culture and Society where she teaches multicultural education and is beginning her dissertation on the pedagogical decisions queer teachers make. She has been with her partner for 10 years and they have two beautiful red-headed boys ages 1 and 5. |
